If *knock on wood* a disaster were to occur right now, how prepared are you? Now is the perfect time to start getting ready because this weekend is the Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday!
Here’s what you need to know: The holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, April 27 and ends at midnight on Monday, April 29. There is no limitation on the number of qualifying items you can purchase, and you don’t need paperwork to claim your tax-free exemption! Want to avoid the stores? You can purchase emergency preparation supplies online during the holiday hours.
These emergency preparation supplies qualify for tax exemption if the purchase price is less than:
- $3,000: Portable generators
- $300: Emergency ladders and hurricane shutters
- $75: axes, batteries, can openers (non-electric), carbon monoxide detectors, coolers, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, fuel containers, ground anchor systems, hatchets, ice products, light sources, mobile telephone batteries and mobile telephone chargers, radios, smoke detectors, and tarps
If you purchase emergency preparation supplies and the sales tax is on these items during sales tax holiday, you can ask the seller for a refund of the tax paid on the item. The seller can either 1) grant you the refund or 2) provide you with a “Right to Refund” form, which will allow you to file a refund claim.
