The future of mobility in our city offers a more sustainable approach

Sugar Land is bringing alternative forms of transportation to our city; by introducing the Microtransit Pilot Project. This transformative initiative is designed to enhance local transportation and make commuting more convenient and sustainable for residents.

Microtransit offers on-demand, flexible transportation within a designated area. Unlike traditional fixed-route buses, microtransit utilizes smaller vehicles such as minivans or SUVs and adjusts routes based on real-time demand. The fleet will feature electric vehicles, including at least one hybrid electric option that is wheelchair accessible.

Public transit is necessary in connecting people to jobs, schools, shopping, and other essential services. Microtransit addresses a clear community need that was identified during the development of our 2023 Mobility Master Plan.

Mobility has emerged as a top priority for our residents, a fact confirmed by our most recent Citizen Satisfaction Survey. This pilot project will be funded for three years through a grant from the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) and support from Fort Bend County’s 2023 Mobility Bond funds. If successful, the service could expand throughout all of Sugar Land.

This service will complement the existing transit services offered by Fort Bend Transit with on-demand, day-of rides and connections to their commuter park and ride lots located in Sugar Land, encouraging transit usage in the region. Fares will be around $2 per trip and will be subsidized by federal grant funding. Fort Bend County is also supporting the pilot project with funds from the 2023 Mobility Bond.

Residents can book rides in some area neighborhoods in central Sugar Land to many popular destinations within the service area zone, such as the regional airport, Constellation Field, Smart Financial Center, the Methodist Hospital, First Colony Mall. St. Lukes Hospital, two commuter park & ride lots, libraries, the University of Houston Sugar Land campus, parks, and a variety of shopping and dining spots. Essentially, you can get to any location as long as it is within Sugar Land (see map graphic below)!

The pilot project, if successful, is envisioned to be expanded throughout the entirety of Sugar Land.  The sustainable operation of the microtransit service, beyond the three-year-long pilot, will require additional federal funding support, public-private partnerships, and other subsidies so that fares remain low for passengers.

The pilot project is an exciting opportunity for residents to experience a new way of getting around town. For more information on this pilot project and Mobility efforts happening in our city, check out:  https://www.sugarlandtx.gov/2792/Microtransit-Pilot-Project
