It’s no secret that Sugar Land is at the heart of one of the most diverse counties in the country.
People from all over the world call our city home, bringing a rich mix of languages, cultures, and experiences that make our community one of a kind. You can see this every day, from the variety of restaurants to the cultural experiences found throughout our city.
In a city as diverse as Sugar Land, everyone deserves to feel heard, understood, and included. When language becomes a barrier, it can make everyday interactions, like asking a question, attending a public meeting, or accessing basic services, more difficult than they should be.
Introducing the Language Access Plan
To better serve everyone who lives, works, and visits here, the City has introduced the Language Access Plan (LAP). The goal of the LAP is to reduce uncertainty, build confidence, and reinforce the City’s role as a partner in ensuring meaningful access to services, programs, and activities for all. It also promotes the use of clear, plain language so information is easier to understand for all residents, including those who may be more comfortable communicating in a language other than English or who benefit from simpler, more accessible communication.
In practice, the LAP provides guidance to City employees on how to provide support when language or communication challenges exist. This includes providing assistance to those whose first language isn’t English, individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, and anyone who may need additional language support to connect with the City.
For example, anyone who needs interpretation during conversations, translation of important documents, or other communication support simply needs to request it. These services are provided free of charge.
“We never want to miss an opportunity to provide exceptional customer service, and for us, that means meeting our community where they are,” said Sabrina Abdulla, Director of Customer Experience. “The Language Access Plan helps us do that by providing the tools and support to serve residents in their preferred languages, communication methods, and ensure everyone can access City services and information with ease.”
