It may not sound like it at first but walking a snuggly dog, leading a Zumba class to a thumping beat or working in a beautiful serene park are just some examples of how you can give back to your community! As part of National Volunteer Week, now’s a great time to grab a group of friends or come make new ones by volunteering with the city of Sugar Land.
“We want volunteers from all walks of life,” Community Engagement Coordinator Paulina Valero said. “Everyone has different skillsets, so we can find a place for them in various departments throughout the city.”
To become a volunteer, residents complete an individual application and background check before being accepted into the Sugar Land volunteer program.
See below for examples of how you can get involved!
Admin positions throughout the city
Are you interested in serving in an office capacity? You can help ensure we are providing residents what they need in a timely and effective manner. Departments, offices and divisions like engineering, building safety, human resources and accounting have utilized volunteers for various admin duties that vary depending on the specific needs at that point in time.
T.E. Harman Senior Center
Teach seniors new skills virtually at the T.E. Harman Senior Center! Classes include Stretch & Tone, yoga and Zumba. The center is always looking for volunteers to teach classes in a variety of skillsets, so if you have something you are willing to teach to some of Sugar Land’s finest, reach out to volunteer@sugarlandtx.gov.
Parks and Recreation
Would you call yourself the Leslie Knope of Sugar Land? The Parks and Recreation Department is looking for volunteers to help with park cleanup and maintenance around the city, as well as the Memorial Park Butterfly Garden. Volunteers can also participate in events hosted by the department like Food Truck Fridays and the annual International Art and Kite Festival.
Animal Shelter
Walk dogs, assist with animal adoptions or clean kennels as a volunteer at the animal shelter. Volunteers may also help with adoption events hosted at local PetSmarts throughout the year. New volunteers interested in the animal shelter must complete both the new volunteer application and a video orientation before they are allowed to sign up for shifts.
Boards and Commissions
If you want to help guide the future of the city by contributing helpful feedback or expertise to projects, you can become a member of a local board, commission or task force. Members can be involved in one of 14 different boards or commissions, including the Building Standards Commission, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and more.
