Let’s have a chat about green waste! ๐ We’re seeing an increase in the amount of green waste we’re picking up across the entire city. In fact, Republic picked up 667.88 tons of green waste this past week. That’s the equivalent to โ take your pick โ 222 Tahoes or 74 ambulances or 19 fire ladder trucks alone! For context: Over the last three years, Republic has picked up around 200 tons of green waste in an average week and about 500 tons per week during peak green waste season.
Weโre actively working with Republic Services to come up with ways to navigate these heavy green waste numbers. Republic is bringing in additional resources like extra trucks to hit more areas of town and, when necessary, are picking up green waste on Wednesdays and Saturdays to try and minimize delays. Additionally, City staff is working closely with Republic to ensure residents are informed as soon as we know there may be a pickup delay in your neighborhood.
With all that being said, we need your help controlling our green waste volumes, Sugar Land! As a reminder, green waste is grass clippings, leaves, brush, tree limbs, and organic material produced in your yard or garden. Green waste is serviced once a week and recycled into mulch. Letโs fight this fight together! ย
DO: Put all green waste in clear or translucent bags. Items in bags that aren’t clear/translucent won’t be picked up.
Here’s what we need you to do:ย
DON’T: Put more than 10 cubic feet of green waste for pick up.
๐ Put your green waste into clear or translucent bags! Items placed in bags that aren’t clear or translucent will not be picked up.ย
๐ Friends donโt let friends put out more than 10 cubic yards of green waste on your curb! This is about the size of 4 standard truck beds.
๐ Tree limbs may be placed out for collection if:
limbs are no longer than four feet in length with a diameter of four inchesย
limbs are no longer than two feet in length with a diameter between four and six inches.ย
๐ Do not block sidewalks.
๐ Do not place any waste within 3 feet of a mailbox, parked cars, or any other fixed objects to avoid potential damages.
๐ When residents put out green waste that exceeds the amount allowed per household or isnโt in a compliant bag or container, it delays service to the rest of the city. It is vital for residents to make note of these requirements and make sure they maintain regular compliance. The City and Republic Services are diligently working to keep up with the increase in volume, but compliance violations can further delay service โ so help us, help you, Sugar Land!
