Want to have a hand in shaping Sugar Land’s legislative priorities? Applications for the Legislative Citizens Task Force (LTF) are open through April 24 at 11:59 p.m.
The program’s goal is to provide a public engagement component to the creation of the city’s legislative agenda. The LTF will examine specific legislative issues that impact the way the city provides public services.
The 2023 Legislative Task Force played an important role in the development of the City’s legislative program. Previous Legislative Task Forces have had a hand in advocating for city priorities, including $28 million dollars to address erosion issues along the Brazos River and $10 million for improvements to the Sugar Land Regional Airport.
2022 Sugar Land Legislative Task Force Members
The 13-member LTF will be comprised of two independent homeowners, one Home Owner’s Association representative, six business owners, two members of Sugar Land’s Boards and Commissions, one Sugar Land 101 current student or alumnus and one student. All applicants must be over the age of 18.
The LTF’s commitment will begin in June 2024 and end December 2025. The LTF will meet a total of five times in June and July 2024, followed by monthly meetings during the legislative session from January 2025 through May 2025. Post-legislative session, the LTF will meet, as needed. Exact meeting dates and location, either in person, virtual or hybrid, will be determined once candidates are chosen and will be based on the candidates’ availability.
During the first five meetings, LTF members will receive information from key city staff, legislative partners and legislative consultants who specialize in municipal issues. Issues include, but are not limited to municipal revenue and finance, land use, regulation and development, economic development, advocacy, and public safety. The monthly meetings will allow the LTF to receive legislative updates from city staff and provide feedback on legislative issues.
Participants will:
review the city’s current legislative position statements and provide feedback on where changes may be needed to better reflect the community’s perspective;
provide a unique, citizen perspective through discussions with task force members, city staff and city partners on legislative issues that impact city services;
make a recommendation on the State Legislative Agenda for the 88th Session of the Texas Legislature to City Council for consideration; and
serve as community advocates for the City’s legislative program during the legislative session.
