At the City of Sugar Land, we believe in giving our young people the tools they need to make positive choices, even when they stumble. Mistakes don’t have to define the future. What matters most is how we guide youth back on the right path. That’s the purpose of our Youth Diversion Plan at Sugar Land Municipal Court.
This program encourages accountability, learning, and growth while providing the support and structure to prevent future offenses. It also ensures the offense doesn’t go on their record. Instead of going through the traditional court process, eligible youth have the opportunity to complete a diversion plan tailored to their situation.
Here’s how it works:
- Youth work with the Municipal Court Judge or Youth Diversion Coordinator to agree on realistic and reasonable terms.
- The plan includes a $50 fee, along with conditions that may include community service, educational programs, counseling, letters of apology, or restitution.
- Participation is voluntary and requires the youth to take responsibility for their actions and commit to completing the agreement.
This approach comes from H.B. 3186, passed during the 88th Texas Legislative Session, which requires municipal and justice courts to establish youth diversion plans. By introducing diversion strategies at the very beginning of a case, the process becomes more effective and aligns with practices already used in juvenile courts across the state.
At the end of the day, our goal is simple: to help youth make better choices, prevent repeat offenses, and create a pathway toward a brighter future.
