A lot of thought and research goes into deciding whether a conventional intersection like a four-way stop or four-way traffic light is enough to ease traffic flow. Sometimes, an unconventional intersection like a roundabout is the best solution.
Regardless of the intersection, Jessie Li, the City of Sugar Land’s city engineer, said that all intersections – those controlled by a yield sign, stop sign or traffic signals – depend on one thing: traffic.
“The first thing that needs to be done are traffic counts,” Li said. “You have to know how much traffic you are handling and from where and what times. Once those traffic studies are run, (an engineer) will see what the best solution is.”
Intersections are also designed to minimize and prevent severe crashes, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration.
