A new amendment to the City’s Land Development Code expands the opportunity for wine bars to bring their businesses to Sugar Land. City Council approved the amendment during their June 4 meeting.

Sugar Land currently allows for full-service bars and wine bars to open in certain Planned Development Districts like Town Square, the Alcoholic Beverage Overlay District that was placed in First Colony Mall in 2023, and in the newly adopted Lake Pointe Redevelopment District.

This new amendment will now allow businesses only interested in selling wine and malt beverages to open in the Neighborhood Business (B-1) and General Business (B-2) zoning districts.

In the past, commercial property owners have expressed to the City that the permitted land uses limit the types of tenants they can attract. This amendment is part of redevelopment efforts meant to incubate and attract more local businesses and allow them to have the resources to grow right here in our sweet city.

“This change makes it easier for quality food, beverage, and entertainment to cultivate in Sugar Land,” Sugar Land Planner II Jessica Echols said. “We’re excited for all the new possibilities this allows and hope that property owners and brokers recognize that we are trying to make it easier for them to bring their businesses to Sugar Land.”
