FEMA Offering Monthly Installment Plans

Sugar Land has experienced its fair share of flooding and natural disaster impacts over the years. As a result, we have taken proactive and innovative approaches to keeping our residents informed and to continue working to improve areas that have historically experienced ponding or flooding during rain events.

To keep our community properties and families safe, Sugar Land created ISWMM (Integrated Storm Water Management Model). This system is connected to 28 rain/stream gauges across the city that report real time information. This information is utilized to create real time ponding maps that include the ponding depths, during a rain event. ISWMM helps evaluate drainage infrastructure to better target potential improvements, coordinates Hazard Mitigation Plans, and assists in the planning of evacuation routes if needed. To access ISWMM and see the ponding levels around your neighborhood during a forecasted rain event, click here https://www.sugarlandtx.gov/2151/Integrated-Stormwater-Management-Model-I

Make sure your home and property stay safe by keeping up-to-date with flood hazard zone mapping. When FEMA updates floodplain maps in a few years, there is a chance that homeowners that aren’t in the current 100-year flood zone may be remapped to the flood hazard zone. If remapped, affected homeowners could be required to purchase flood insurance. In previous years, FEMA required all insurance premiums to be paid on an annual basis. On November 1, 2024, that changed. FEMA has implemented a rule that removed the regulatory barriers to offering an installment payment option.

Installment plans allow policyholders to split one annual payment into a series of smaller, more manageable recurring payments. Both new customers (at the time of application) and existing customers (at the time of renewal) have the option of paying their flood insurance premiums in monthly installments rather than one upfront annual payment. Once initiated, the policyholder cannot change the selected payment schedule during the policy term.
